01 · OverviewPhantom at a glance
Phantom is a self-custodial crypto wallet that began on Solana and grew into a multi-chain app with swaps, trading and payments. In Phantom's own words, self-custodial means you control your funds and the company never has access.
For a Meteora user, the appeal is straightforward. Phantom is the wallet most Solana apps test against first, its interface is clean enough that a first-time LP can read what a transaction does, and it adds a security layer on top of the basics: built-in scam detection that flags malicious transactions. Media reports put its monthly active users at roughly 15 to 17 million at peak, which gives a sense of how many dApps assume you might be using it.
The trade-off of a broad, feature-rich app is surface area. Phantom now covers swaps, perps, prediction markets and a debit card. None of that is required to provide liquidity, and every extra feature is another screen to understand. The rest of this review separates what matters for DeFi from what is a convenience.
02 · FeaturesWhat Phantom does beyond holding tokens
In-app swaps and trending tokens
Swap tokens without leaving the wallet and browse what is trending. Handy for topping up the second token of a pair before you open a position, though you should still compare the quote with a dedicated venue.
Perps
Phantom offers perpetual futures inside the app. Media reports say they have been powered by Hyperliquid since mid-2025, with leverage of up to 40x. Leverage is a separate, much higher risk than LPing.
Prediction markets
Phantom lists prediction markets among its features, letting you take positions on event outcomes from the wallet. Treat them as a separate activity with its own rules and risks.
Phantom Cash
Pay or send money, with a prepaid Visa debit card issued by Lead Bank that works with Apple Pay and Google Pay. It is a bridge between your wallet and everyday spending.
Phantom has also grown by acquisition. According to media reports, it bought Bitski in 2024, the transaction-security company Blowfish in November 2024 and the data provider SimpleHash in 2025. Blowfish is the relevant one for DeFi users, since it fits the scam-detection layer Phantom promotes. Phantom reportedly raised a $150M Series C in January 2025.
03 · CoveragePlatforms and chains
Phantom runs almost everywhere a Solana user would want it. The spec sheet below sums up the platforms; the chain list comes with a caveat.
| Mobile | iOS and Android apps |
|---|---|
| Browser extension | Chrome, Brave, Firefox and Edge |
| Desktop trading | Terminal, a web trading app at trade.phantom.com |
| Custody | Self-custodial; keys stay on your device |
| Hardware | Ledger |
| Chains | Solana plus several other networks; check the app |
Phantom does not list its chains on its homepage, and secondary sources give lists that change as networks are added. Solana, Ethereum and Bitcoin are the core of it, with other EVM networks and newer chains added over time. For Meteora this does not matter, because everything happens on Solana. It matters when you deposit from an exchange: always choose the Solana network for SOL and SPL tokens, and confirm in Phantom that the receiving address is your Solana address, not an Ethereum or Bitcoin one.
04 · SecurityHow Phantom protects you, and where it cannot
Phantom's security has three parts: the self-custody model, scam detection on transactions, and optional hardware signing. Each covers a different threat.
Self-custody and the recovery phrase
When you create a wallet, Phantom generates a recovery phrase. Your app password encrypts the key on that device; the phrase restores the wallet anywhere. Phantom states that its support will never DM you or ask for the phrase. If anyone asks, including someone using Phantom's logo, it is a scam.
Scam detection
Phantom says its scam detection flags malicious transactions instantly. In practice this means a warning screen when a transaction or site matches known malicious patterns. It is a valuable second opinion, but it is not a guarantee: brand-new drainers may not be flagged yet. Your own read of the preview, which tokens leave and which arrive, is still the final check.
Ledger for larger balances
Phantom lets you connect a Ledger, so the private key never touches your computer and each signature requires a physical confirmation. Meteora also lists Ledger among supported hardware wallets. A practical setup: one hot Phantom account for daily activity, and a Ledger account in the same app for funds you do not touch often.
05 · SetupInstall Phantom and back it up, step by step
Setting up takes about ten minutes. The part people rush, the backup, is the part that matters.
Download from the official source
Go to phantom.com and follow the download link for your browser or phone. Fake extensions with similar names and logos exist; check the publisher and the number of users in the store listing.
Create a new wallet
Choose to create a new wallet and set a strong password. The password protects this device only; it is not a backup.
Write down the recovery phrase
Copy the words in order onto paper or a metal plate. Do not screenshot it, email it or store it in a notes app that syncs to the cloud. Store it somewhere you would find it in five years.
Confirm and lock the device
Complete Phantom's confirmation step, then make sure your phone or computer itself has a screen lock and up-to-date software.
Fund with a small test amount
Copy your Solana address from Phantom and send a small amount of SOL from an exchange, choosing the Solana network. Once it arrives, send the rest. Meteora advises keeping at least 0.05 SOL in the wallet for fees.
Optional: add a Ledger
Install the Solana app on your Ledger, then connect it in Phantom as an additional account. Move longer-term funds there.
If you still need SOL, our guide on how to buy Solana explains how to buy it and withdraw it to a self-custody wallet.
06 · MeteoraConnect Phantom to meteora.ag
Meteora supports wallets that follow the Solana Wallet Standard, and Phantom is one of them. The connection only lets the site see your public address and request signatures; it does not give Meteora control of your funds.
Open the real site
Type meteora.ag yourself or use a bookmark. Avoid links from DMs, replies or sponsored search results.
Click Connect Wallet
Choose Phantom from the list. The extension or mobile app opens a request showing the site's address. Check it says meteora.ag, then approve.
Check transaction settings
In Meteora's settings you can pick a priority level (Fast, Turbo or Ultra), set a maximum fee cap or an exact fee, and choose how transactions are broadcast. Meteora's docs note that DLMM transactions always go through Jito. You can also switch the RPC if data looks stale.
Make your first action small
Try a small swap or a small position first. When Phantom shows the confirmation, read the balance changes: the tokens you deposit should leave, and a small amount of SOL should be spent on fees and rent.
Disconnect when done
Phantom keeps a list of connected apps in its settings. Revoke sites you no longer use. It does not undo past transactions, but it reduces the number of sites that can prompt you.
07 · PracticeTips for running Meteora positions from Phantom
A few habits make Phantom noticeably smoother for active LPs.
- Budget SOL for rent, not just fees. A DLMM position locks about 0.059 SOL of rent, refunded when you close it. Being the first LP in a new price range adds about 0.075 SOL of non-refundable binArray rent.
- Unwrap leftover wSOL. Some liquidity actions leave wrapped SOL in your wallet. Meteora's docs point to Phantom's instructions for unwrapping it back to native SOL.
- Watch the total fee during busy periods. The Solana base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, but priority fees can dominate during launches. A high priority setting across many transactions adds up.
- Hide spam tokens, do not interact with them. Unknown tokens that appear in your wallet are often bait for a fake claim site.
- Separate accounts by purpose. Phantom supports multiple accounts; use one for experimental pools and another for core positions.
Strengths
- Widely supported across Solana apps, including Meteora.
- Built-in scam detection on transactions.
- Mobile, four desktop browsers and Ledger support.
- 24/7 support team.
Watch-outs
- Many features beyond DeFi add complexity.
- Multi-chain means more chances to pick the wrong network.
- Scam warnings are a backstop, not a guarantee.
Phantom is a strong default for most Meteora users. If you only use Solana and care most about staking and hardware signing, compare it with Solflare before you commit.
